    PROCEDURES in general anesthesia

A small percentage of patients feel extreme discomfort during dental procedures. Dental fear (can be caused by sound dental headpieces, needles, a stronger push, touch, smell, white coat etc.) can result from the bad treatment experience in the past. In most cases, providing the full information to the patient about dental procedures and using adequate local anesthesia, the fear and discomfort are manageable. When this approach doesn’t work (usually with children), then general anesthesia is needed. Other indications for general anesthesia in dentistry can be a long-term and unpleasant procedure, mental disorders, expressed vomiting reflex and so on.

    Possible levels of general anesthesia:

    • Oral sedation (administration of pill). Dental procedure treatment time is about 40 minutes (1-2 teeth). This does not always work. Most frequently it is used for children and rarely for adults.
    • Intravenous (IV) sedation. Possible available levels are: minimal, moderate and deep (narcosis). Dental procedures’ time could be several hours (full mouth treatment: dental caries, wisdom teeth removal, dental implants and so on). The level of anesthesia is reliably controlled.

The need for general anesthesia is decided by the dentist during the consultation with the patient and/or the accompanying persons. In all cases, after the activation of general anesthesia, local anesthesia is performed.

Before the intravenous sedation consultation of the anesthesiologist is required. 4-6 hours before the procedure patients are not allowed to eat and 2 hours before – not to drink fluids.

After general anesthesia the patient is looked after by the team of doctors. The person accompanying the patient is necessary as the patient cannot drive a car.

General anesthesia is performed at “Kardiolita” clinic’s dental office under the care of anesthesiologist-reanimatologist. On duty anesthesiologist and in-patient anesthesiology-reanimatology services are also available. This ensures the highest safety and quality of service.

After “Kardiolita” clinic’s anesthesiologist consultation about general anesthesia, dental treatment will be done by qualified professionals of ProDentum clinic.
