Professional oral hygiene

Professional oral hygiene is recommended 1-2 times per year, if the dentist does not recommend otherwise. During professional hygiene procedure the teeth are cleaned with ultrasonic, handheld and rotating instruments and soft and mineralized plaque is removed. After, all surfaces are carefully polished. Plaque around dental implants is removed using special instruments, which do not scratch the surface of a dental implant. After professional care patients should be instructed on proper personal hygiene, and special measures are prescribed individually for each patient.

Personal oral hygiene is the key to the dental health. Soft plaque is the cause of the vast majority of carious lesions and periodontal disease. It is a patient’s responsibility to clean soft plaque. Failing to do this, will compromise the prognosis teeth, fillings, dental prostheses and implants. Thus, the patient is also responsible for the long-term result of the treatment and dental restorations. In case oral hygiene is not sufficient – all restorative procedures (dental fillings, prosthesis fabrication) are strictly postponed! If professional oral hygiene failed to improve the situation and personal hygiene is good – periodontal surgery may be needed.

The following may be recommended for personal oral hygiene: *

  • Soft toothbrush;
  • Prophylactic or therapeutic toothpaste (1000 ppm of fluoride);
  • Dental floss;
  • Mouthwash ;
  • Interdental brushes;
  • “Superfloss” dental floss;
  • Plaque disclosing tablets.

* – In the case of dental prosthesis special care not mentioned above can be recommended.
