Periodontal disease is very prevalent in Lithuania, at 95 percent of adults. For this reason, thorough patient examination is vital to choose the most appropriate treatment and follow-up. One of the most common symptoms of periodontal disease and gum inflammation is bleeding gums. Periodontal pocket depth probing, index calculation, X-ray and other tests are performed to objectively evaluate this disease. The cause of periodontal disease is plaque. It causes inflammation, which destroys bone and teeth become mobile. If the disease progresses, teeth may be lost.

If patient’s disease is not severe, usually professional tooth cleaning and thorough tooth care at home is sufficient. In more severe cases, thorough pocket cleaning (curettage) or flap surgery (when a gingival flap is raised to allow for better access to inflamed tissues and calculus) is necessary. In order to obtain good treatment results personal oral hygiene must always be impeccable.

Gum recession may expose root surfaces and prosthesis margins, and may cause tooth sensitivity. In such cases gum margin corrective procedures, gum thickening or other plastic surgery procedures. If patients received dental implants, their oral care should be even more thorough than natural teeth.
