Professional oral hygiene
Unless your dentist recommends otherwise, professional oral hygiene should be performed 1-2 times per year. During the procedure, ultrasonic, manual and rotary instruments are used to clean mineralized plaque (calculus) and to polish tooth surfaces. For patients with dental implants, special instruments are used to avoid scratching implant surfaces. After professional oral hygiene, personal hygiene instructions are given.
Personal hygiene is key to having healthy teeth. In most cases, tooth decay and periodontal problems are caused by plaque, and the patient is responsible for removing it. If personal oral hygiene is insufficient, plaque worsens the prognosis of teeth, implants, fillings and prostheses. In other words, the longevity of treatment results also depends on the patient’s efforts.
If serious problems are observed, all restorative procedures (prosthetics and fillings) must be delayed! If professional oral hygiene does not solve those problems, periodontal treatment may be necessary.
The following measures may be recommended for personal oral hygiene:*
- Soft toothbrushes
- Dental floss
- Interdental brushes
- Mouth washes
- Superfloss dental floss
- Preventive or therapeutic toothpaste
- Plaque-staining tablets
* If prosthetic tooth restorations have already been placed, other measures not mentioned above may be recommended.
