Periodontal disease is very prevalent in Lithuania, at 95 percent of adults.

Periodontal disease is very prevalent in Lithuania, at 95 percent of adults. For this reason thorough patient examination is vital to choose the most appropriate treatment and follow-up. One of the most common symptoms of periodontal disease and gum inflammation is bleeding gums. Periodontal pocket depth probing, index calculation, X-ray and other tests are performed to objectively evaluate this disease. The cause of periodontal disease is plaque. It causes inflammation, which destroys bone and teeth become mobile. If the disease progresses, teeth may be lost.

If patient’s disease is not severe, usually professional tooth cleaning and thorough tooth care at home is sufficient. In more severe cases, thorough pocket cleaning (curettage) or flap surgery (when a gingival flap is raised to allow for better access to inflamed tissues and calculus) is necessary. In any case, in order to achieve good treatment results, personal oral hygiene must be impeccable.

Gum recession may expose root surfaces and prosthesis margins, and may also cause tooth sensitivity. In such cases gum margin corrective procedures, gum thickening or other plastic surgery procedures. If patients received dental implants, their oral care should be even more thorough than natural teeth. Perimucositis (inflammation of the gums around the implant) may develop if the restorations are not cleaner properly, which later progresses into periimplantitis (inflammation and loss of the bone surrounding the implant). Usually periimplantitis outcomes are worse, compared to periodontitis, therefore the patients must be properly advised on the importance of oral hygiene after implant treatment, and they must return for follow-up visits regularly.

Specialists at ProDentum clinic consult and provide comprehensive treatment.
