ICON system procedure (treatment of tooth decay without drilling)

Using the ICON system, the initial decay is treated in a microinvasive way (without drilling) while the decay is limited to the enamel and the outer third of dentin.

Usually patients complain of tooth discoloration or staining (white, brownish, yellowish). These stains may have various causes: demineralization (initial decay), fluorosis, trauma or infection. Using ICON resin infiltration, these stains can be removed or severely diminished. Using the ICON system, the initial decay is treated in a microinvasive way (without drilling) while the decay is limited to the enamel and the outer third of dentin. This procedure is efficient and effective only in the initial stage of decay. If the decay is deeper, tooth filling is recommended.

Procedure plan:

During the procedure, the patient’s teeth are isolated using a rubber dam or by other means. Tooth surfaces are cleaned and polished; then, the ICON system is used. Tooth surfaces are exposed to a special acidic material “ICON-etch”, then washed and dried using the “ICON-dry” material. Then the stains are infiltrated using the “ICON-infiltrant” resin. Finally, the teeth are polished. After the procedure, a follow-up visit is scheduled. The procedure takes 30 to 60 minutes. ICON system procedure (treatment of tooth decay without drilling)
