Implant placement using dynamic navigation

Implant placement using dynamic navigation

Dental implant placement is a surgical procedure where high precision is of greatest importance. Extra-precise dental implant positioning has a lower risk of complications, and occasionally allows us to avoid bone augmentation.

ProDentum is the first clinic in Lithuania to perform implant placement using dynamic navigation. Dental implant placement is a surgical procedure where high precision is of greatest importance. Extra-precise dental implant positioning has a lower risk of complications, occasionally allows us to avoid bone augmentation, and improves implant placement results. Accurate implant placement facilitates restoration manufacturing, there is a smaller margin of error in prosthetic components, a lower risk of complications and a better long-term prognosis. Dynamic navigation has been used in neurosurgery and other surgical areas requiring exceptional precision for some time.

Procedure plan:

After a consultation and evaluation of the jaws, the teeth and other factors, the clinician draws up a treatment plan and discusses it with the patient. A cone-beam 3D computed tomography (CBCT) exam is performed. The number of implants, the design of the restoration, need for bone augmentation and other issues are evaluated. Using this data implant positions are planned in the virtual environment using navigation software. When the plan is confirmed, implant placement may be done during the same visit.

Dynamic navigation is a type of guided implant placement. These days a very common guided implant placement procedure is using 3D-printed surgical guides (static navigation). However, 3D printing these surgical guides requires a lot of time, it is difficult to cool the implant site, which increases the risk of bone heating, patient feels more discomfort and the healing period may be more difficult. If there are some errors, it is not possible to modify this guide, and implant placement may have to be carried out without it (free-hand). On the other hand, during dynamic navigation it is possible to modify the position of the implant in the software screen and the procedure is continued without losing accuracy.

Advantages of this technique:
  • The virtual planning of implant placement is done quickly, implant placement may be done during the same visit;
  • No need for a 3D-printed guide, reduced time and cost of treatment;
  • Better bone cooling during dynamic navigation, less traumatic, easier healing;
  • Limited mouth opening is not an issue during dynamic navigation, less need for wide mouth opening resulting in more patient comfort;
  • In case of inaccuracies, the dynamic navigation plan may be modified on the spot and the procedure may be safely continued;
  • The procedure is simple and flexible (compatible with any implant system and various surgical instruments);
  • Implant placement is vastly more accurate, compared to “free-hand” implant placement..
