Tooth prosthetics using fixed restorations
Often large scale tooth crown defects cannot be restored using fillings. In these cases, inlays, onlays or crowns may be used to restore damaged teeth. Usually, zirconia or full-ceramic crowns are used. In order to achieve the most aesthetically pleasing result and reduce plaque accumulation, zirconia-based fixed prostheses are usually chosen.
Anterior tooth restoration using full-ceramic crowns
Tooth arch defects due to the loss of one or several teeth may be restored using fixed partial dentures (bridges). However, this method has a big drawback, as the adjacent teeth need to be grinded, they receive increased chewing load, they are difficult to clean, and have an increased risk of decay and a less favorable prognosis. For reasons above, dental implants are recommended, especially when healthy teeth would need to be grinded for a bridge prosthesis.
Restorations for ProDentum clinic are made in the modern digital laboratory Digitorum LAB, this ensures smooth work process and effective quality control. Clinic’s specialists also work with high-quality dental labs in Lithuania and abroad. Fixed tooth restorations are usually done over 2-3 visits. Advanced digital technology allows us to manufacture large-scale restorations over a short period of time, without compromising the high quality of the work.
IMPORTANT! Only teeth with a good prognosis may be restored. There are three main parameters to consider:
- Prosthetic prognosis. A certain amount of tooth hard tissue remaining: walls no thinner than 1 mm, no less than 2 mm higher than the gum line.
- Root canal condition Teeth need to be vital or root canal treatment needs to be flawless. There can be no inflammation around the tip of the root. The root can have no cracks or other defects.
- The tooth must not be mobile and have no gum and/or periodontal inflammation or lesions.
Before starting work on definitive restorations, the dentist makes sure that teeth to be treated are well-prepared, and discusses the situation with the patient. After root canal treatment is performed, teeth are restored using one of several methods, using a glass fiber post and/or composite. Metal post-and-cores are rarely used these days. It is always important to evaluate if bite height (vertical dimension of occlusion) has been lost, which also requires treatment.
In ProDentum clinic we provide all tooth prosthetics services and can manufacture any type or construction of fixed tooth prostheses. Tooth prosthetics are performed by clinic’s prosthodontists, who will help you decide on the most appropriate treatment option based on all patient’s factors, including health, time and financial restraints.
Tooth prosthetics using removable dentures
In cases of exceptionally large tooth arch defects, with three or more teeth lost, treatment with bridges is difficult, and sometimes impossible. In some cases, implant-treatment of tooth arch defects is also not possible. In those cases, to restore teeth and chewing function, treatment using removable prostheses is planned. There are several types of removable prostheses:
- Partial removable prostheses (when some teeth remain);
- Complete dentures (no teeth remaining);
- Overdentures (when the base of the denture is supported by an implant or root of a tooth);
These restorations are manufactured in various ways: from acrylic resin only, or with a metal framework.
Removable dentures can be attached to adjacent natural teeth using hooks or less-visible attachments. Patient should be informed that there are many types of removable dentures, and that they are less effective at restoring the chewing function. Removable dentures need more thorough care. Usually this treatment method is chosen because of lower cost, in cases of unclear tooth prognosis or as a temporary prosthesis.
If the situation allows, removable dentures may also be manufactured from a soft resin (made by Valplast, Bredent, etc.). Our prosthodontists provide consultations regarding removable dentures.
