The goal of corrections is to move the teeth to their proper positions, and in turn to straighten the tooth arch. A straight bite is important not only for appearance, but also for improved tooth function.
Orthodontic treatment may be performed on both children and adults. The best time to correct bite problems is when a child is between 7 and 13 years old. Treatment during this age allows to expect the best treatment results.
Orthodontic treatment allows to keep teeth healthy and have an attractive smile.
The indications and contraindications for orthodontic treatment are determined by the orthodontist after thorough patient examination. In some cases such treatment may not be recommended, or it may be recommended along with other treatment methods (prosthetics, fillings). Orthodontic treatment is performed only after proper preparation: treatment of decayed teeth, professional tooth cleaning.
Various devices may be used for orthodontic treatment:

Tooth straightening using aligners
Tooth straightening using transparent custom aligners is an innovative method of orthodontic treatment.
It is a great alternative for patients with metal allergies, or for those who want to avoid braces and are concerned about their appearance. During the treatment, many sets of aligners are made, which are worn according to the orthodontist’s instructions. Patients often say that people often don’t notice the aligners, only notice the straighter teeth and increased confidence.
Aligners are transparent custom mouth guards to straighten teeth.
Aligner treatment is suitable for adults and teenagers with all their permanent teeth. This technique is suitable to correct crowding, gaps, crossbite, open bite, to perform intrusion, extrusion, correction or rotation, correction of Angle II/III bite, tooth movement before restorative treatment, orthognathic surgery, and exceptionally well suited for periodontal patients. It is also a great alternative for patients with metal allergies, or for those who want to avoid braces and are concerned about appearance.
Treatment process
On the first visit the patient is examined to find out whether aligner treatment is suitable. In that case, patient data is gathered: facial and intraoral photos, intraoral scanning or dental impressions, X-rays. This information is transferred to the dental laboratory, where a custom 3D treatment plan is made. If the patient accepts the treatment plan, aligners are manufactured and orthodontic treatment is begun. Halfway through the treatment, additional intraoral scanning or impressions may be necessary to manufacture the final aligners.
Wearing aligners
At the beginning of treatment or every time a new set of aligners is used, the patient may feel pressure or tension; the feeling should disappear in 2 to 3 days. Aligners may affect speech and pronunciation, but the effect disappears over time. Aligners must be worn no less than 22 hours per day. They are taken out only when eating or smoking. Aligners should be stored in special boxes so that they don’t break. A new set of aligners is used every two weeks. Check-ups with your orthodontist are scheduled every 6 to 8 weeks. Aligners should be cleaned using a soft toothbrush and a mild toothpaste. Treatment time depends on the initial situation and the number of aligners needed. Usually 8 to 25 aligners are needed for a single jaw. However, in case of more pronounced malocclusion more aligners may be needed.
What else should I know
During aligner treatment small pieces of filling material are attached to some teeth to improve the retention of the aligner or to facilitate tooth movement. The orthodontist may also prescribe to wear special rubber bands called elastics. After treatment, a retentive wire is attacked to the inside of the lower front teeth so that the teeth do not return to their initial positions. It is also recommended to wear aligners at night.
Removable appliances
An orthodontic plate is a fundamental treatment method for correcting bite issues in children and adolescents under 18 years of age. This removable appliance gradually adjusts the position of the teeth and jaws, promoting proper alignment. As one of the most straightforward and non-invasive orthodontic solutions, it is particularly suitable for early intervention, allowing for more effective long-term results.
Braces
Braces offer a highly effective solution for addressing misaligned bites in both adolescents and adults. By exerting continuous pressure over time, they gradually guide teeth into proper alignment, improving both functional bite and overall appearance. Beyond aesthetic enhancement, braces help prevent long-term dental issues, such as jaw misalignment, uneven tooth wear, and difficulty in maintaining oral hygiene.
Orthodontic braces can be made from both metal and ceramic materials, offering patients options based on their preferences and needs. Metal braces are durable and effective, often chosen for their strength, while ceramic braces are more discreet due to their tooth-colored appearance, making them a popular choice for those seeking a more aesthetic option. Both types provide equally effective results in correcting bite and alignment issues, ensuring a functional and visually improved smile.
