What is cosmetic bonding?

It’s a modern treatment method to restore damaged or unappealing front teeth. The goal of bonding is to restore a tooth so it blends with the adjacent teeth.

The advantages of cosmetic bonding

Compared to other treatment techniques, such as prosthodontics or orthodontic treatment, cosmetic bonding is very conservative and does not require the removal of healthy tooth tissues.

A single long visit (4-6 hours) and a short check-up visit is usually sufficient. It is a very convenient solution for busy patients, patients living in other countries or simply for those looking for a fast and effective solution.

Small shape and shade corrections may be done even after several years post-treatment without re-doing the whole treatment.

It is important to know that cosmetic bonding needs polishing every year to maintain gloss and prevent deterioration.

When is cosmetic bonding recommended?

Cosmetic bonding is recommended when you are not satisfied with the shape, form, size, translucency of your teeth or their position in the tooth arch, or with old fillings of the front teeth. Often cosmetic bonding is performed after orthodontic treatment, when the bite is correct, but small details are lacking for the perfect smile. We also recommend bonding worn tooth edges.

How is cosmetic bonding done?

Professional tooth cleaning is necessary before bonding, some times we advise bleaching the teeth as well. At the beginning of the procedure local anesthesia is performed to reduce patient discomfort. Decay and old fillings are removed from the teeth. Tooth surface is prepared for bonding. During the restoration, various layering techniques are used to restore tooth anatomy. The restorations are made from the latest-generation composite materials. These composite materials are durable and long-lasting, have a variety of shades which enable the clinician to recreate the appearance of your natural teeth and achieve great results. At the end of the procedure, the fillings are polished. The final result (appearance) of the procedure is evaluated only after several days. The teeth need to rehydrate to regain their actual color and transparency. During the bonding procedure teeth dry out, so they look very white and opaque. The follow-up visit is necessary to ensure the patient is satisfied with the final result. Corrections are made, if necessary, and the teeth are re-polished.

Maintenance after cosmetic bonding
  • If worn tooth edges were restored or teeth were lengthened, care should be taken when biting hard foods.
  • Intensely colored food and beverages (tea, coffee, red wine, turmeric, curry, carrots, red berries, iron supplements, etc.) should be avoided the first day.
  • Teeth should be cleaned using a soft toothbrush and a non-abrasive toothpaste. Avoid whitening toothpastes (they are usually very abrasive) or herbal toothpastes and chlorhexidine mouth washes. Do not forget to floss or use interdental brushes.
  • Re-polishing should be done every 6 to 12 months.
